Early Life & Background

Nathaniel Bassey was born on August 27, 1981, in Lagos, Nigeria. He hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. His father, Mr. E. Joshua Bassey, was a minister, which meant Nathaniel grew up in a Christian home with strong faith influences. From a young age he showed interest in music, particularly through the trumpet.

Education

He studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Lagos. He also took music studies at the Middlesex University Summer School in the UK. His educational background combines secular studies with musical training.

Music & Ministry Career

Nathaniel is a gospel music minister, trumpeter, songwriter, worship leader, and pastor. Before focusing fully on gospel ministry, he was involved in jazz and music ensembles, including serving with jazz bands and big orchestras. His debut album Elohim came out in 2008, and since then he has released several albums, many of which have become widely sung worship pieces.

He is also known for launching the “#HallelujahChallenge,” an online worship and prayer gathering that invites believers worldwide to worship and pray, especially in midnight sessions.

Style & Influence

His music spans genres—gospel, worship, hymns, jazz, medleys—and is marked by heartfelt lyrics, soulful trumpet sections, and deep spiritual devotion. Songs like Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro, among others, have become anthems in Christian gatherings. He leads worship not just through music but also through mentoring others, speaking at worship seminars, and pastoral work.

Pastoral Work & Personal Life

Nathaniel is pastor of The Oasis Lagos (youth church of RCCG King’s Court). He is married to Sarah Bassey, and they have children. He lives in Lagos and continues to balance his roles as pastor, musician, and worship leader.
