Early Life & Family

Michael Mahendere was born into a Christian family as one of seven children. Alongside his brothers Akim, Misheck, and Amos, he formed the Mahendere Brothers, a gospel group that marked the beginning of his music career. His passion for music began in childhood, and he started performing and recording from a very young age.

Musical Beginnings & Growth

He began singing around the age of seven and recorded his first project with the Mahendere Brothers in the early 1990s. Over the years, he taught himself to play multiple instruments including guitar, keyboard, and drums. His musical journey also involved directing choirs, most notably the United Family International (UFI) Choir, where he became a key leader.

Rise to Prominence & Key Works

Michael rose to prominence with songs like Makanaka Jesu, which he rearranged and performed with the UFI Choir. He is widely known for his album series Getting Personal With God, which features songs such as Mumoyo and Salt of the Earth. These works have become staples in Zimbabwean gospel music and beyond.
