Early Life & Background
Nathaniel Bassey was born in Lagos but hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He grew up in a Christian home and developed a love for both music and God’s word from a young age. He studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Lagos before pursuing music more intentionally.
His early interest in jazz and trumpet playing shaped his unique gospel sound. He later attended music training at the Middlesex University Summer School in the UK, focusing on music and dynamics.
Music Career
Nathaniel Bassey began his career playing the trumpet in the Steve Rhodes Orchestra, one of Nigeria’s top jazz bands at the time.
He transitioned into gospel music, using his trumpet and voice to lead believers in worship.
Over the years, he has become one of the most respected worship leaders in Africa, with his songs being sung in churches worldwide.
He is also the convener of the global online worship movement Hallelujah Challenge, which gathers thousands of worshippers to praise God at midnight.
